Baby Sun Rose

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine. —Anthony J. D’Angelo

Tiny and radiant, the baby sun rose sprawls across the edges of sidewalk gardens, unremarkable except for bright magenta blooms that wink back at us. Some may call it simple groundcover. But up close? Each bloom is a miniature burst of joy.

In its native South Africa, Mesembryanthemum cordifolium is cherished for just that—a living carpet of sunshine with heart-shaped foliage. This humble little succulent carries a compound within called mesembrine. Found in high levels compared to many other plants, mesembrine is also present in kanna, a South African plant traditionally used for calming the mind and lifting the spirit.

Delight appears in the tiny moments if we pause long enough to notice.

Welcome to the #estagram series, a blog-based grid collection that conveys what I’m learning in my daily mindfulness practice.

Creating mantras I can repeat to myself helps me stay grounded in challenging moments, and it reminds me how worthy I already am. Macro photography is an art that reminds me to make moments for stillness and tranquility. Weaving together these mantras and macro moments into a special blog feed is an essential element of my mindfulness practice that deserves to be preserved.
